About

I'm Shauna, an Australian who moved to Scotland in 2003. And I loves my food! I live for ice cream and toast. I collect chocolate bar wrappers. I dream of melted cheese and mangoes.

But me and the food have a complicated relationship. I grew up on a farm eating healthy homegrown fare, but as I got older food became something I used and abused. I swung from binges to strict diets and ended up morbidly obese by 23. I've spent the past five years busting off over 70 kilograms with good eating and loads of exercise. Now vastly smaller and healthier with just ten kilos to go, I'm looking closely at the way I eat and trying to find a balance for good. How does one embrace a fanatical love for food without being a ravenous pig about it? This question has baffled scientists for millenia. Well it's baffled me, anyway.

Haven't you got enough blogs already?

Well! After five years of personal blogging and fat blogging, I'm restless. I want to write about butter and sugar and cocoa nibs like all those lovely food blogs I've been drooling over.

Unfortunately, I seem to gain weight just reading about butter, so Cooking With Ginger is going to focus on the healthy stuff. I get a lot of emails from Dietgirl readers asking for ideas and hints, so this goes out to those who love the butter and sugar but really shouldn't eat it too often. I will rabbit on and on about what I've learned about healthy eating over the past five years. Plus general stories about food. With the occassional cake recipe thrown in.

(If you get bored waiting for this blog to get going, you can read about my various food adventures and obsessions in the Dinner Time and Scottish Cuisine archives on What's New Pussycat.)

Why call it Cooking With Ginger?

Because ginger is nice and zingy and healthy. Which is what I'd like to be! And Ginger is what Scottish people called redheads, of which I happen to be one. Yeah I know. It's the best I could come up with!
