Pack Yer Bags

Just a quickie - if you're an Aussie and you've ever wanted to come to the UK on a Working Holiday visa, it's just got a whole lot easier thanks to a review of the scheme. Thanks Rory for the heads up!

1.   Applicants aged between 17-30 may apply [previously only up to 27!]. Applications must be received in the British High Commission before their 31st birthday.

2.   All work restrictions have been removed. This means applicants can work in whatever profession they choose for as long as the like within the limit of the 2-year visa.

3.   After one year spent in the UK, applicants may switch to Work Permit employment if they have company sponsorship.

So come and see sexy Scotland!

So what about us non-Aussies...? Can't they do anything about us?! :)

2 · Sarah said:

Yeah, some of us Americans are dying to leave our countries and work abroad too!

3 · acb said:

Do you have a link to the actual news release? I haven't been able to find it.

(hmmm, London...)

4 · acb said:

Sarah: you should check with your local UK embassy. Given the close ties with the US (especially in light of the recent geopolitical situation), I wouldn't be surprised if there was some similar classification for Americans.

The fact that London's full of US expatriates also suggests that that may be the case.

Bloody hell! That's something to think about...

There's just no hope for Americans wanting to work abroad... it's VERY difficult.

We are totally trapped.

What amazes me is how easy it is to come HERE and work, yet to work (or even live) in, for example, Europe, an American needs 1) company sponsorship which must prove nobody else in that country can do the job (yeah, right!), 2) a work visa OR must be financially self-suppored (i.e. rich). Even then, there's no guarantee that the EU country will grant you the visa. What happened to the free market? Personally, I believe that labor should be free to move over borders at will, but that's a looooong time coming.

And where can we get that neat font you use for "Talk Amongst Yerselves"?

8 · shauny said:

svarit - i can't remember where i found it, to be honest. it was on a free font site somewhere...

acb - i can't remember the exact link... (tis a day for not remembering things)

and it doesn't apply to london.

the aussie quota in london has been filled for the next 20000 years.

Thanks for spreading the news!

I was thinking of just getting a student visa for the year starting October, but mebbe I'll want to work/bum around for a year after.

Might be worth looking into before I leave ... would certainly be handy to have a work permit once done with the books 'n stuff ...

HAH!

well if our charming gov't doesn't approv my boy's app for a spouse visa, i'll be off to scotland in a jot anyhow begging them to have me. i followed him home, will you keep me?

12 · Rory said:

Here's the exact link.

And scotty the body, could you send me the Easy directions for how to get a working visa for the US? I tried on and off for five years without any luck, but guess I was following the Difficult ones... the ones that sound almost exactly like the European situation you describe; and the Canadian situation; and the Australian situation; and just about any place. (Aussies also say how 'easy' it is to get into Australia, when it's nothing of the kind.)

13 · Luke said:

Rory: hear, hear. I was about to say that Scotty's never tried to apply for a fucking Green Card; getting in to the US is a real trial, and will, I'd imagine, get more difficult as time passes. Canada's no different, either.

Previously, also, to get into the UK to work for anything OTHER than a two-year get-out-of-jail-free type visa, one had to prove that one was doing a job that couldn't be filled from the existing UK labour force, and had to either be a) a particular type of worker and self-supported or b) supported/sponsored by a company. I would imagine that this still is the case, even with the loosening of restrictions on the working holiday visas. They're not going to let permanent workers in willy-nilly... much like the US, eh?

Central to the Aust/UK thing is, of course, the idea of the Commonwealth - which does add something positive to the struggle. You know, the whole tugging-forelock thing has to show some benefits, sometime; one might never be able to feel the joy of living a Withnailean experience in a Camden bedsit if one lived in a republic, say...

14 · Graham said:

Fuck Camden, I want to go to Widnes!

15 · Luke said:

Not Scunthorpe?

GEE WILLIKERS! That's a total heads-up for me considering I've got that 28th birthday looming and we'd decided not to move to the UK since we couldn't hold the positions we favour.

Ooooh. Think. Think. Think. I'm going to tell T-bone right now.

18 · momo said:

oh the bastards ... i just read your london comment.

What were the restrictions?... And they are removed now?. Could Shauny be the new Queeny for two years?
EIIR was 25 when she became EIIR. So why not a SIIR (The II here is for the II years...)
